Who’s behind Black Fam Creations?
We are a family-run business. One of us is an artist and the other a researcher. Our kids and extended family are in on the fun, too. By accident, while looking for historical children’s art featuring African American kids, we discovered a painful open secret about the rampant history of racist exclusion and arbitrary, Eurocentric devaluation of Black people and the arts in the United States. Amid this brutal erasure and distortion of true depictions of African-Americans, their lives, perspectives, world views and awesome (mostly lost) talent from our collective history, we found and keep finding gems from the past.Learn more about our story here.
What is Black Art?
It is a broad term describing the visual arts of Africa and the African Diaspora. On this site we heavily feature vintage historical, early 20th century, and contemporary visual artists of the black American community (aka African Americans). African American art is produced in America with influence of a number of cultural traditions that include Africa, the Americas and Europe. All types of artwork are welcomed here, from folk art to fine art, trained artists and self-taught, work from specific periods (e.g. the Harlem Renaissance) and activist artist collectives that kept the vital work of Black Artists alive (e.g. The Highwaymen) when the mainstream art world arbitrarily chose to exclude us to the detriment of American arts in general, illustrators and drawing artists to mixed media and other arts including quilting, collage, printmaking, basket weaving, pottery, and wood carving, digital media, installation art and more.
