black people look like cats. alot of us look like cats. wide smiles cat eye strong jaws tired eyes large skills wide noses plump lips with usually intensely far away state, like something else is always more important than what you are currently saying to us.
the person he drew looked very young. blacks are plump while young but when we age our features tend to think out. thinner lips and stronger eyes as we age. we go from looking past you to looking through you. my people are complicated to draw

Thanks so much! I wish there were more videos like this, whenever I draw a character from my head (instead of drawing a model, I mean) they pretty much always end up look half caucasian, half Asian.

You're not a special snowflake, people's genetics and background is a determining factor in how you look. And from that, A LOT of people look similar. So stop it with the 'Not everyone has –' rebuttle. Pure fucking idiocy.

I'm black and I didn't even think this was racist at all

The character looks like a well drawn Black person and there's no mistaking that I think that's what he's going for. And after describing each feature he always said generally speaking. Calm down folk.

I do like your drawing. But Africa is the most genetically diverse continent in the WORLD eventhough the vast majority of inhabitants are black!! Fact.. Africans (including those of African descent) don't all look the same. And if you are familiar with African people, you can even tell who's from what country and what tribe just based on their facial features and how they look. A West African looks different to a south African for example. Even in Nigeria, you can tell a Yoruba from a Hausa. A person of Asante will look different to a Fulani or someone from Zanzibar. There are differences and variances and not as basic as the drawing. Remember Africa is a continent, not a country. Its almost like saying how do you draw an American face with American features, even though there are ethnic differences such as native Americans, Mexicans, Brazilians etc. But yh, although this is a drawing, it is very basic and almost stereotypical and it is NOT as common either if you put every black person in perspective. MAYBE those of west african descent, but its not common for everyone in Africa.

Oh and I am Black too…please do not waste none of your valued skills and time to address any hater's post towards your work. The ignorant one's comments are made because you're a white dude who captured or essence better than they ever could! I'm am in total awe that you drew a anatomical version with step by step instructions, not time lapsed, of a image of a Black person in 5 minutes!!! As we say in our community…LET THE HATERS HATE!!! God Bless ExpertVillage!!
vernasgirl says
AAAAAAAHHHH! where have you been all my life? I am left handed as well. I've been drawing off and on for about 22yrs now..in high school. I just aged myself, and I have never had the opportunity to learn from a left hander. You have inspired me so much more to start drawing again because of your blessing of been left handed. We are a rare breed and its God's gift to you that will inspire a whole other category of artist. THANK YOU!
Rico Allen says
Not bad. I think it's pretty accurate as far as how to identify our looks. Just a little help for people who are drawing characters. If you want to draw women, their features are typically(not always) a little more "soft" than men. They have more rounded off features and we, men, have more block-ish features. Great video.

Great video we need more like it. People this nonsense about being black, being African and i'm not this and i'm not that crap…STOP! if you have black(African) features, mixed or not, light or not, you have the black(African) gene in you, unless you look white(Caucasian) or Asian(Mongoloid) STOP this crap about being called black or African, be proud of the first and most oldest lineage on the planet. Be proud of that part of yourselves. Self hate does not heal or help, it hurts and festers.
