Edward Loper: Great African American Painter

We learned a lot from this wonderful narrative video on Black Americans within the arts world !!

Edward Loper : African American Painter is a film is based on a 1998 oral interview.

Edward Loper, Sr. is one of Delaware’s most celebrated cultural figures. Born on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware. Loper worked for the Works Progress Administration Art Project, and then took a job at the Allied Kid leather tanning factory, where he continued painting after working hours. In the late 1940s he became a full-time art instructor and painter.

This film was made possible with funding provided by the Delaware Heritage Commission, Delaware Humanities Forum, Hagley Museum and Library, and the Longwood Foundation.

I am glad I was able to meet Edward before he died. Truly gracious and I loved meeting Janet whose paintings were also impressive. I hope she is well.

He was the most amazing teacher and mentor I could have ever had. I owe so much of who I am today, to Mr. Loper.
