Jay West Is Generation Y’s Most Important Visual Artist [Culture] | Elite Daily

We love this amazing video on Black
and art works !!

Harlem native and contemporary artist Jay West is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most promising visual artists of Generation Y.

The 23-year-old’s work is about “mixing opposites, and making worlds collide.” Drawing from a diverse spectrum of inspirations, West’s paintings deal with subjects from popular cartoon characters, religion, technology and greek mythology.

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Jay in New York City, where he showed us his favorite location in Central Park and invited us into his studio to showcase his work. During our conversation, we learned some interesting things about the NY native and his craft, including how his journey started.

Do you guys know Rothko and Pollock and some of these names? One of them splatters paint all over the place and sells for millions, the other sells for a bit less on average but only draws rectangles. Action painters? Purely money, and bullshit, and having friends in high places.

Why is he the "most important" artist of "gen y"?  Because he says so?  Not that I'm a huge fan of Shepard Fairy, but he probably has the best argument for "most important" of our time purely based on his exposure and making propaganda fashionable (again).  And he played a big role in branding Obama as cool.  Obama may not have been our president for the last half century if not for him
