Hewitt collection
Through their friendships with artists, Vivian and the late John Hewitt, built an important collection of African American art . The work was for a long time in their home, which doubled as a gallery. Eventually the collection was acquired by Bank of America and moved to the Harvey B. Gant Center for African American Culture, Charlotte, North Carolina. Artists in the collection include Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Ernest Crichlow, Jonathan Green, Eugene Grigsby, Jacob Lawrence, AnnTanksley, Henry O.Tanner and Hale Woodruff.
In this documentary, art is shown and talked about by Mrs. Hewitt, artists Ann Tanksley, Jonathan Green, Eugene Grigsby and Kenkeleba Gallery director Corinne Jennings, accompanied by a music score by Pheeroan akLaff. Here at Umaxxi, the documentary is by Charles Martin, who teaches Comparative Literature at Queens College, City University of New York, and regularly exhibits at June Kelly Gallery.
